The Japanese public broadcaster NHK confirmed last Tuesday that the animated weather girl mascot on its News Watch 9 program is voiced by Aki Toyosaki (Yui in K-ON!, Nako in Hana-Saku Iroha, Chitose in Yuruyuri). The character, addressed as "Haru-chan," co-hosts the weather report with human weather forecaster Hiroko Ida.
Haru-chan has been a mainstay of News Watch 9 before this year, but she formerly appeared onscreen as just an unmoving, still-frame mascot. Starting on May 23, Haru-chan went on the air with a voice and (limited) animation. The character has her own website with a photo gallery, a sample video, and profiles of her animated friends and associates.
Among Toyosaki's recent roles, she voiced an animated reporter in a documentary film about Japanese media in March.
