As much as I love martial arts and action movies, I sometimes question the mentality of the average henchman. So you watched Tony Jaa take down 49 other guys with brutal and acrobatic Muay Thai--do you really think you stand more of a chance because you're lucky number 50?
I'm glad that Team Ninja is addressing this in the upcoming Ninja Gaiden 3, where enemies will turn and run if they see Ryu Hayabusa carve through their comrades, like any intelligent person would. From Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi:
"When we were thinking about what to do in Ninja Gaiden 3 and the future of action games, we didn’t think about having longer combos with more hits or adding more weapons. In order to make an action game that appeals to adults, we needed to have action and emotion. Something that would make a mature audience get out of the game and into the experience."
"...We’re presenting this story with Ryu Hayabusa as a dark hero and for players to feel it we need them to get blood on their hands. If you’re looking to play the easy way where you just use ninpo to clean up enemies without cutting anyone down that’s running away from the experience. We want players to feel a connection to Ryu and to do that they have to have blood on their hands too."
Desensitization is a weird thing. While I can gleefully laugh as I drill an enemy to the floor and get them to spin around in Bulletstorm(thus earning the Skillshot "Breakdance"), I don't think I can bring myself to go after a random bad guy who's running for his life after seeing his friends get cut down.
What do you think? Are you going to let the poor, fleeing henchmen go home to their villainous wives, children, and pets, or do the wicked deserve no quarter?
